Sony’s reprojection system doubles the frame rates of PSVR 2 games, but also introduces blurriness. According to one developer, Sony is looking to improve the system.
Horizon Call of the Mountain uses it, Resident Evil Village uses it, and Gran Turismo uses it as well. We are talking about reprojection, a rendering technology that renders artificial frames to increase the frame rate from 60 to 120 Hz without performance loss.
Many VR headsets use some form of reprojection, and Sony’s implementation is not considered the best. Some users complain of blurriness or nausea in VR games that rely on reprojection. The lack of it has therefore become a selling point for certain VR games.
Game Producer: PSVR 2 will only get better thanks to updates
The visually stunning PC VR title Hubris, which is coming to Playstation VR 2 this week, also uses reprojection. In a Q&A session on Reddit, the VR game’s producer Koen Van den Steen answered all sorts of questions from PSVR 2 fans, apparently letting slip that Sony is working on an improved version of the rendering technology.
“I think the PS VR 2 will get better every update from now on, a good example will be future improvements to their reprojection system which they are working on right now,” Koen writes. Koen later says that reprojection artifacts could be seen in Hubris, but only if you know what to look for.
Hubris on PSVR 2: Even sharper than the PC VR version
The studio improved the PC VR version for Playstation VR 2, which was released in late 2022, both in terms of graphics and gameplay. The 30-person studio spent about six months on the port.
“The resolution is considerably sharper because we can upsample a lot due to foveated rendering, so all the textures etc. will look way sharper then on desktop unless you had a super high end rig which could already super sample x2 or x3,” Koen writes on Reddit.
The PSVR 2 port also fixes a number of issues with the PC VR version, improves the AI, and brings a new soundtrack to match the gameplay. Koen promises graphics that are not too far behind showcase titles like Call of the Mountain.
PC VR fans won’t go away empty-handed, by the way, as the studio plans to release the improvements for the PC VR version as well. That would upgrade this variant retroactively.
Hubris will be released on June 22nd for Playstation VR 2 and Meta Quest 2, the latter of which you can see in the trailer above. Let’s see if Jan has to revise his Hubris review in terms of game mechanics.
